When asked about his perception of the DIFF’s evolution throughout its 8 editions, Abdulhamid Juma, the Chairman of the festival said that he’d always known that Dubai was just the perfect place to hold a spectacular event, the thing that would sure guarantee a successful growth to the film festival that soon became one of the largest in the region.
This year, the DIFF hosted 171 films, which is a great line-up for a freshly 8-year-old festival, yet it was a challenge that eventually proved the festival’s fast development and maturity.
One of the smartest decisions taken this year, was screening “Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” at the opening. With lots of its scenes shot in Dubai, the movie would inspire young local filmmakers as well as putting the city on the big movie productions’ list worldwide.
Holding 9 competition categories, in addition to some extra prizes out of these, the DIFF also handed the “Lifetime Achievement” awards to 3 legends of the world cinema: the internationally renowned filmmaker Werner Herzog, the Egyptian actor Gamil Rateb, and the Indian musical genius Allah Rakha Rahman.
The 2011 Dubai International Film Festival winners included artists from Palestine, Morocco, UAE, Jordan, Lebanon, Iraq, Tunisia, Egypt, Germany, France, UK, Japan, Singapore, Turkey, Iran, Vietnam, and many more.
With the 10th edition soon upon us, you’d wonder if there would be grand plans ahead for it, and Mr. Juma answered that by saying that the festival is so much bigger than the individuals working on it, and that what he aims for, is to leave a great, prestigious legacy fit for this major artistic phenomena throughout all its editions, the past ones, and those yet to come.
