Chelsea not interested in Tottenham’s Luka Modric or Everton’s Jack Rodwell in January, says Andre Villas-Boas

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas has moved to quash speculation that he will move for Tottenham playmaker Luka Modric or Everton youngster Jack Rodwell in the January transfer window.

The Blues had more than one large offer for the Croatian midfielder turned down in the summer and, while expressing his admiration for the Spurs man, the Portuguese insisted that their interest would not be followed up this winter.

'In the future, I don't know about Modric,' Villas-Boas said at a press conference.

'We're not looking at it at the moment.

'He's an extremely creative player, one of the greatest talents in the world, a player who will have tremendous success.'

Rodwell, who won his first senior England cap in November, had been linked by some to Stamford Bridge, with Toffees boss David Moyes insisting that no offers have been made, and Villas-Boas has played down the rumours.

'I saw that we'd been linked with him,' the Blues manager added.

'First, it's important to clarify that it's unfair that I constantly comment on other players.

'In midfield, we don't need players. Rodwell has been playing there this season.

'Midfield is not a sector where we're desperate to strengthen our squad. So at the moment those stories are false.'

The former Porto coach also admitted that he is unsure as to whether or not he will send prodigious young midfielder Josh McEachran out on loan in January, with several clubs believed to be interested in a temporary deal for the 18-year-old.

'It's fair to say we have to look at some proposals for Josh's loan,' Villas-Boas continued.

'His playing time has not been much, but, because of his talent, it’s not 100 per cent sure that we’d send him out on loan, even if clubs come in for him.'
